Michigan Legislative Scorecard
The decisions of our state legislators play a crucial role in shaping Michigan’s future. In fact, the way they vote has a direct impact on the lives of all Michiganders, our economy, and the ability of small businesses to thrive and create jobs.
With so much at stake, it’s essential to hold our elected officials accountable for the choices they make. This legislative scorecard highlights the critical votes taken by our legislators, providing transparency and insight into how their decisions affect everyone’s well-being.
Policies and Positions
Senate Bill 34: Right to Work Repeal
Repealing our state’s landmark “Right to Work” law hurts workers and small businesses by increasing costs and reducing personal freedoms. Employees are now forced to join and financially support unions, which reduces their take-home pay. Mandatory union participation makes it harder for job providers to stay competitive and grow, which hurts our economy.
House Bill 4007: Prevailing Wages
The new “Prevailing Wage” law harms workers and businesses by artificially inflating labor costs. It forces businesses, especially small ones, to pay above-market wages for public projects, limiting their ability to hire more workers or expand operations. It also drives up taxpayer costs for public infrastructure projects.
Senate Bill 14: ‘Stricter than the Fed’ regulations
The measure allows the state to exceed federal standards and impose more burdensome regulations on businesses, making it harder for job providers to operate efficiently. Higher business costs result in fewer jobs, stagnant wages, and limited economic opportunities, harming Michigan’s overall economic health.
Senate Bill 12: 3rd Grade Reading
The measure repeals a law that required third-graders to achieve reading proficiency. Third grade is a pivotal year where students transition from learning to read to reading to learn, and failing to master this skill can lead to long-term academic struggles, lower graduation rates, and reduced opportunities in adulthood.
Senate Bills 395/396: Weaken Teacher Evaluation
The measures undermine accountability in education by reducing the emphasis on student standardized test scores when evaluating teachers. By minimizing this important metric, schools no longer have reliable data to assess teacher effectiveness. This could result in lower academic standards and ultimately harm students.
House Bill 5507: Diverting Teacher Retirement Funding
The measure raids the public teacher retirement system of about $670 million to spend on other initiatives, even though the retirement system is still about $30 billion in debt overall. The measure also ignores a 2018 law that requires the state to stay on schedule with its debt payments.
House Bill 4166: A-F Grades for Schools
The measure reduces accountability and transparency by repealing a law that provided simple A-F grades to school districts based on teacher and student performance. Parents and taxpayers now have a more difficult time trying to assess school performance. Without this grading system, it’s become more difficult to hold schools accountable.
