Help the WMPF and GR Chamber to Support Workforce Housing
Last week, the Michigan House of Representatives passed bi-partisan workforce housing legislation to increase attainable housing throughout Michigan. The legislation is now back in the Senate for final approval. Help us demand action, by contacting your Senator and the Governor to approve Senate Bills 362, 364, 422 & 432.
The legislation enables locally-driven tools to create housing for households earning 60%-120% of area median incomes. Why is this important? Research shows that there is a significant gap in housing at all price points, making this an important challenge for talent retention and economic growth.
The Grand Rapids Chamber has led the effort on this important issue. According to Josh Lunger, vice president of Government Affairs with the Grand Rapids Chamber, West Michigan employers see housing supply and affordability as a critical workforce, talent, and quality of life issue. Once passed, the legislation will create more opportunities for people of all incomes to find stable homes.
Once passed the legislation will:
- Allow local governments to opt-in to tools for workforce housing support.
- The package acknowledges that needs are different across the state, while still including caps so projects can be adjusted to meet unique community needs and the economic realities of a project.
- The legislation is specifically targeted to create and retain housing supply for working households.
